Most leaders know how to manage tasks, projects, and timelines.  They can forecast, juggle priorities, and track deliverables like a boss. But what happens when things aren’t going as planned? When the team lags, and performance falls below standard… what do leaders do to bring it back on track?

The accountability formula that once worked to drive better performance no longer does. And, as with many seasons of change, it feels like the pendulum has swung so far in the opposite direction that the path to what actually improves performance has become completely unclear.

Here’s the good news:

We don’t have to pick between a workplace that holds each other accountable and one where people feel good. In fact, discomfort is a necessary part of growth.  That is how we grow and evolve.  There is no progress without it. No new normal without the tension of navigating the unfamiliar.

And here is the challenge:

Leading humans requires humanity.

The new motivation equation requires leaders to root deeply in what makes us human. How we evolve, grow and even survive.

When leaders learn to cultivate trust, build relationships, align values and inspire a shared vision, something powerful happens.  They ignite an inner motivation that drives a shift in behaviour, enabling people to perform at a higher level. When they see their work as aligned with their values and beliefs, they willingly stretch beyond their comfort zone. They become more resilient, hard-working and excited about their contribution to the future.

I have seen it happen many times. Teams bring their best to the table and then go even farther.  Not because they are told to do more, but because they are inspired to rise to the challenge from somewhere deep inside themselves. This capacity for growth is built into us as humans.  It lives in every team. And as leaders, it is part of our job to find that spark, light it and fan the flame.
